JCOAL handed over the 2008 IKi awards to four individuals from Japan and one individual from the Department of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Dr. Irwan Bahar. Iki award is given by JCOAL to several individuals who plays a major role in developing bilateral cooperation with Japan and is also successful in the coal mining world. Dr. Irwan Bahar is only the second Indonesian to receive this award since it was conceived in 2001.

The Mining Law which was approved during the plenary meeting of the House of Representatives is aimed at regulating working area tenders, so that it will be carried out transparently and democratically. This law also seeks to simplify the Working Contract on Coal Mining (KK/PKP2B/KP) into a Mining Permit (IUP).

The Coal and Mining Law, approved during the House of Representatives plenary meeting on December 16, 2008 seeks to domestically increase mining commodity value. Mining companies are required to process their products domestically and at the same time prohibited from exporting raw material. This is aimed at increasing state revenue, opening new job opportunities, and increase public welfare.
